Sporting and recreational life took on a considerable importance from the earliest days of the Porcupine Camp. Spurred on by recreational outlets, wagers or competitive rivalries, sporting events covered a wide spectrum, from organized mine leagues, whose teams recruited from amongst the best athletes in Canada, recreational teams which gave a much needed outlet for young men and women to individual events, such as dog sled races which offered the winners a cash purse.

In contemporary times, minor and junior hockey programmes have produced an outstanding number of hockey players who have gone on to compete professionally. Amateur sports has also contributed to the City's sporting achievement, with City residents gaining berths on National Ski Teams and Special Olympic teams.
